When you are waiting for a tow truck to come pick you up on the side of the road, it isn't always the safest time possible. That's why you should do everything possible to make sure that you are safe while you are waiting for the tow truck. So, what are some of the things that you can do in order to stay safe?
Attract Attention
One of the things that you can do is to make sure that you are attracting as much attention as possible from the other drivers. If you attract their attention, they are less likely to hurt you because they see you and can avoid you. You can attract attention a lot of ways. The easiest way is to grab their attention is to use movement and color. If you have something that can move around or flutter around, that will show the other drivers that you are there. You can do that with something like a sheet,T-shirt, or scrap of material that is secured to your car somehow. The wind can move that material around, which will attract the attention of the other drivers. You can use color by using things like safety orange flares or triangles that you put on the side of the road behind your car so that drivers have to pass them before they get to your car.
Get Away From the Car
Another thing that you can do is to get away from the car in some way. Whether it's going inside a building near where your car broke down, or just doing to sit away from the side of the road while cars pass by, it doesn't matter. What does is that you are away from your car and if someone were to hit it on the side of the road, your risk of injury is much lower. Of course, it's not always possible to do that, especially if the weather is bad. What you can do then is to pull your car over as far as possible onto the shoulder or into a parking lot. The further off the actual roadway you are, the better chance you have.
